Bourbonnais 8th Graders Dive into Holocaust Education with Immersive VR Experience

Eighth graders at Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center recently had an incredible chance to learn about history in a whole new way. They partnered with the Illinois Holocaust Museum for a unique experience that left a lasting impression.

Using virtual reality (VR) headsets, students were able to “walk” alongside Holocaust survivors. This immersive experience allowed them to hear personal stories of survival from people who lived through this dark chapter in history. They explored different settings, from the survivors’ hometowns to concentration camps, all in rich 360-degree detail.

The opportunity came about thanks to Mrs. Austiff and Mrs. Lara, who applied for a scholarship to rent the VR headsets. Their successful application opened up a powerful learning experience that brought the stories of Holocaust survivors vividly to life.

As students navigated these virtual environments, they listened to firsthand accounts of struggle and resilience. This technology made the horrors of the Holocaust feel more real and personal, allowing students to connect emotionally with history.

By participating in this program, the students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of remembering the Holocaust. Experiences like this one help shape their views on empathy and the power of education. Many of them walked away with memories that will stay with them for years to come.
