Bowen Yang is making his position clear.
The Saturday Night Live star responded to comedian Michelle Best. She accused him of being behind the firing of Shane Gillis back in 2019. Gillis was let go from the show after past comments, including racial and homophobic slurs, resurfaced from a podcast.
In a comment on a video from SNL‘s Instagram, Best said, “Can we acknowledge that Bowen Yang got him off the show? And he’s the bigger man to come host after being unfairly ditched because of a whiny queen. Good for him!” Yang quickly replied, “Didn’t do any of this but I wrote the sketch you were a background actor in,” with a smiley face emoji.
Yang has been part of SNL since 2018. He started as a writer and became a cast member the following year. Shane Gillis, after his firing, returned to host the show last year and is set to host again this weekend, with singer Tate McRae as the musical guest.
In an interview last October, Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of SNL, shared that he was upset about Gillis’ dismissal. He mentioned that while Gillis made a mistake, the reaction was overblown. “I thought he was the real thing,” Michaels said. He explained that it was NBC that ultimately decided to fire Gillis, adding that while he didn’t agree, he understood their choice.
