Bowen Yang, a beloved cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” will leave the show mid-season after the episode hosted by Ariana Grande. Although there was speculation about his leaving, Yang had spoken with show creator Lorne Michaels, who encouraged him to stay. Yang shared that Michaels’ support meant a lot, especially when he felt the audience might be tiring of him.
Beyond SNL, Yang co-hosts the podcast “Las Culturistas” with fellow comedian Matt Rogers. He has appeared in productions like “Wicked” and “Fire Island.” He even hosted a pop culture awards show last summer and will return for more next year.
Yang has made a mark with memorable sketches, including his portrayal of the Titanic iceberg on “Weekend Update.” He has also played various characters, from a humorous George Santos to a gay Oompa Loompa. Recently, he spoke about the pressure to fit into stereotypes tied to his identity and emphasized that his work is more than just those labels.
Interestingly, mid-season departures from SNL are not new. Cecily Strong did the same in December 2022.
Yang’s journey reflects a broader trend in the industry where personal fulfillment is becoming just as important as career achievements. This mirrors findings from a Gallup survey showing that 71% of employees seek a fulfilling job rather than just a paycheck.
