Bowie State University, the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Maryland, has exciting news. It recently received a significant funding boost aimed at strengthening the nursing workforce in the state.
The university was granted $2.2 million from the Maryland Department of Nursing through the Maryland Higher Education Commission. This is the largest grant ever awarded by the department. Over the next four years, this funding will support 20 new doctoral faculty members in Bowie’s Ph.D. program. The main goal is to increase the number of qualified nurse educators, a critical need for nursing schools across Maryland.
Bowie State University serves over 6,100 students. It offers a wide range of academic programs, including 29 undergraduate majors and several master’s and doctoral degrees.
The nursing profession is facing urgent challenges. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be around 193,100 vacancies for registered nurses each year until 2032. This shortage arises from many nurses retiring or leaving the workforce. Alarmingly, 80% of nursing faculty openings require or prefer candidates with a doctoral degree, showing the importance of advanced education in this field.
Dr. Jacqueline Hill, chair of the Department of Nursing at Bowie State, expressed the gravity of the situation. She noted, “There’s a nationwide shortage of nurse educators. This limits how many nursing students schools can enroll. The MHEC grant will help us train more Ph.D. nurse educators and boost enrollment in our undergraduate nursing program.”
She added, “This grant is a game changer. More Ph.D. faculty will help us prepare better nurses. The demand for highly skilled healthcare professionals is growing rapidly.”
