Bowie State University is making strides in mental health research with a new grant from the National Institutes of Health. This $99,999 grant will help set up an AI and Machine Learning Health Research Laboratory on campus. The goal? To advance health equity through technology.
In the first year, the lab will build its technical foundation and recruit a diverse team of experts in AI, data science, and public health. The focus in the second year will be on practical research, targeting the mental health challenges faced by residents in Prince George’s County.
Researchers will use advanced machine learning techniques to analyze large data sets. By identifying social and demographic factors linked to mental health issues, they hope to spot hidden patterns that traditional methods might miss. Dr. Melissa Duchene-Kelly, the project lead, emphasizes that these AI technologies could help identify at-risk populations early, paving the way for preventive measures and timely care.
This project also aims to create personalized interventions and digital tools to improve treatment and broaden access to care. Dr. Duchene-Kelly notes that this collaborative approach could significantly impact community health outcomes, positioning Bowie State as a leader in AI-driven health initiatives.
The AIM-AHEAD program is a partnership between Bowie State and the University of Texas Health Science Center. It’s part of a larger effort to increase diversity in AI research, focusing on engaging underrepresented researchers in this rapidly advancing field.
Mental health is a growing concern in many communities. According to the CDC, in 2021, over 20% of adults in the U.S. reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. Projects like the one at Bowie State are crucial in addressing these widespread issues and ensuring that innovative solutions are accessible to all.
As the world adapts to new technology, initiatives like this not only aim to improve health but also foster a sense of community and support among those navigating mental health challenges.
