“Him,” a sports thriller about an aging quarterback training a rising star, had a rocky start at the box office. The film earned $13.5 million during its opening weekend, falling short of the anticipated $15 million. Despite excitement, it couldn’t unseat last week’s champion, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle,” which took in $17.3 million.
The other new release, “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” fared even worse with only $3.5 million. Starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, the movie received negative reviews, landing just a 38% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Poor audience reactions were reflected in its “B-” CinemaScore grade, suggesting a weak box office performance ahead.
Internationally, “Him” struggled too, making just $400,000 across 25 markets, totaling around $13.86 million worldwide. With a budget of $27 million, hopes for a profit are slim, especially considering its low scores of 28% on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C-” from audiences.
David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research noted that while producer Jordan Peele often brings success, the reception for this film is lukewarm at best. “C-” scores indicate dissatisfaction, especially for a thriller.
Similarly, “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” fell behind its own low expectations of $8 to $10 million, with a disastrous $8 million total worldwide. The film’s hefty budget of $45 million seems daunting against such losses, especially when the reviews are lackluster.
On the other hand, “Demon Slayer” continues to impress. It has become the highest-grossing anime film in North America with $103 million to date, despite a drop in sales from its record-breaking $70 million debut.
Meanwhile, in the top five, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” emerged strong, adding $13 million to its total, making it the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring franchise with over $151 million domestically. Both “The Long Walk” and “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” tied for fourth place, each earning about $6.3 million.
Interestingly, overall box office returns are up 4.4% compared to 2024 but still lagging 22% behind figures from 2019. Upcoming films, including Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and Taylor Swift’s concert film, are expected to boost numbers in the coming weeks.
In today’s ever-changing film landscape, audience response plays a crucial role in a movie’s success. As we’ve seen, even star power can’t always save a film from disappointing box office results.
