Box Office Breakthrough: ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Soars with .4 Million in Previews, Outshining ‘Superman’ as 2025’s Top Earner!

Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps is making waves at the box office. It pulled in a remarkable $24.4 million from preview showings—the highest preview earnings of the year. This surpasses the previous record of $22.5 million set by Superman just weeks ago.

The film, featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, is projected to earn between $100 million and $110 million during its opening weekend. Some industry insiders even believe it could exceed those estimates, potentially bringing in an additional $90 million to $100 million internationally. This could give Fantastic Four a total worldwide debut of between $190 million and $210 million.

This month has already seen the release of Superman, which topped the box office for two weeks. When comparing the two, Fantastic Four is expected to perform similarly. Superman kicked off with a $125 million domestic take and a massive $220 million globally.

With a hefty production budget exceeding $200 million, plus over $100 million spent on marketing, Fantastic Four needs strong reviews to drive ticket sales. The box office typically splits ticket revenue with theaters, with studios receiving about half.

Marvel’s earlier releases this year, including Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, struggled at the box office. Captain America earned $12 million in previews and opened at $88.5 million, while Thunderbolts pulled in $11.5 million during previews and opened at $76 million. Both films ended up not recouping their budgets, leading some to point to “superhero fatigue” among audiences.

With First Steps, Marvel aims for a fresh start with the Fantastic Four, bringing them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a series of unremarkable films from Fox. The movie features a unique retro-futuristic style and involves the superhero family facing off against Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Critics are responding positively, with an impressive 89% “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition, Disney, Marvel’s parent company, is set to surpass $3 billion in global box office earnings this Friday, making it the first Hollywood studio to hit this milestone this year.

With these performances, it’s clear that the superhero genre remains a significant draw, but audience preferences are evolving. Understanding viewer tastes will be crucial as studios adjust their strategies for future releases.
