Blumhouse is making waves again in the film industry. Their latest release, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, is expected to bring in a strong $56.6 million from 3,412 theaters, marking the highest opening for this weekend post-Thanksgiving. This is notable considering it has not been adjusted for inflation.
Despite what critics say—Freddy’s 2 holds a mere 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 33% for its predecessor—audiences are enjoying it. With a B CinemaScore, which is pretty good for a horror flick, it seems viewers are embracing the sequel.
While it may not reach the impressive $80 million opening of the first movie, comparing the two isn’t easy due to their different release strategies and timing.
Some key achievements for this sequel include ranking as the second-best horror opening of the year, only trailing The Conjuring: Last Rites (a collaboration between Atomic Monster and Blumhouse), and the highest opening for a PG-13 horror film this year.
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on the popular game series by Scott Cawthon, grossed over $300 million globally. Josh Hutcherson returns to star, with Emma Tammi directing again. The sequel had a fantastic start, raking in $30.1 million on Friday alone, including previews.
In comparison, Disney’s Zootopia 2 is projected to earn around $45 million, bringing its total above $222 million domestically. Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu, is seeing a significant drop of approximately 75% in its third weekend, with a domestic total of around $296 million.
In fourth place, the anime film, Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution, is looking at an estimated $10 million from 1,823 cinemas. Two titles from Lionsgate are battling it out for fifth place, each expected to make around $4 million.
The Whole Bloody Affair, combines both parts of Kill Bill into one, complete with an exciting new anime sequence. While the runtime exceeds four hours, it includes a 15-minute intermission to give viewers a breather.
As these films compete, it’s clear that audiences are in for an entertaining season. Themes of nostalgia, excitement, and suspense seem to resonate, bringing both new and familiar stories to the big screen.
