Original films are making a splash at the 2026 box office. One standout is Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary, featuring Ryan Gosling. It debuted to $80.6 million domestically and another $60.4 million internationally, totaling $141 million—a significant achievement for Amazon MGM Studios as it aims to solidify its place in Hollywood.
This success comes at a critical time. The film industry is facing shifts, with Paramount-Skydance merging with Warner Bros. This merger has provoked worries about job losses and the future of diverse storytelling in film.
Project Hail Mary is just the second original film in a decade to earn over $80 million at its opening, following Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Gosling leads alongside Sandra Hüller in this adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel, where a science teacher embarks on a mission to save two worlds with an unexpected ally.
Before its release, Hail Mary was expected to earn around $50 million, but audience and critic reactions skyrocketed its success. The film received an A CinemaScore and impressive ratings on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes—96% from viewers and 95% from critics.
Other films have struggled to match this level of success. Aside from Project Hail Mary and Oppenheimer, only five films have crossed the $50 million mark since the pandemic, reflecting changing viewer habits.
Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, Kevin Wilson, celebrated this win, stating, “This is what makes this business special. Early screenings and massive presales indicated that this film would be a hit.” His comments underscore the impact of early audience enthusiasm on overall box office performance.
The film opened in 82 international markets, from the U.K. to China, showcasing its broad appeal. For MGM, building a robust international distribution system is crucial for long-term success in Hollywood.
Meanwhile, Pixar is revitalizing its reputation with Hoppers, which has earned $242.6 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year so far. This suggests that original storytelling, even from established studios, can still draw audiences.
Franchises weren’t absent over the weekend either. The Indian film Dhurandhar: The Revenge, featuring Ranveer Singh, also exceeded expectations, claiming over $10 million. Another new release, Searchlight Pictures’ horror-comedy Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, opened with an estimated $9.1 million domestically, marking a promising start.
As the film landscape evolves, audience reactions and original storytelling will shape the box office trends moving forward.
