Box Office Breakthrough: ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Soars to $218 Million Worldwide, While ‘Superman’ and ‘F1’ Zoom Past $500 Million!

Marvel’s latest superhero film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” has made a splash at the box office, raking in $218 million worldwide, including $100 million from international markets. This debut slightly outperformed “Superman,” which earned $95 million in its opening across 78 territories.

“The Fantastic Four” premiered in 52 countries, with Mexico leading the way at $12 million. The UK, France, and Brazil followed closely. However, it struggled in China, garnering only $4.5 million. This is not surprising, as China has grown increasingly skeptical of superhero films in recent years. Notably, “Superman” managed $6.6 million in its Chinese debut despite its strong recognition.

Directed by Matt Shakman, the film showcases the adventures of Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) as they face off against a cosmic threat. Early reviews and audience buzz seem promising, which could help its box office performance in the weeks ahead.

Marvel’s recent journey has been rocky. While “Deadpool & Wolverine” became a billion-dollar success, earlier releases like “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts” fell short against their $180 million budgets.

Other big films also made waves this weekend. “Superman” added $19.8 million despite a drop of 57%, totalling $213 million internationally. A typical blockbuster usually earns about 60% of its profits from outside the U.S., a concern for Warner Bros. given “Superman’s” struggles.

On the other hand, “Jurassic World Rebirth” and “F1” continue to shine. “Jurassic World Rebirth” surpassed $700 million globally, earning $23.5 million this weekend alone. While its performance is impressive, it faces the high bar set by its earlier trilogy, which each made over $1 billion.

Meanwhile, “F1,” Brad Pitt’s racing drama, earned $20 million this weekend, bringing its total to $509 million. It illustrates the enduring appeal of star-led projects in a competitive market, especially when they don’t directly compete with superhero flicks.

Overall, while Marvel aims to regain its foothold in the box office, audiences are eager to see how these films perform in this ever-evolving landscape. According to a recent survey by Box Office Mojo, superhero films still dominate, but viewer tastes are shifting, and studios may need to adapt to maintain their success.
