Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms” has made a splash, breaking records for A24 with an impressive opening weekend. The film, inspired by Parsons’ popular YouTube series, pulled in $38 million on Friday from 3,442 theaters. Experts predict it could reach between $85 million and $90 million by the end of the weekend—more than triple the previous record set by Alex Garland’s thriller “Civil War,” which debuted at $25.5 million in 2024.
“Backrooms” tells the story of a furniture store owner who stumbles upon a portal to a strange, otherworldly realm. The film features stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass, with producers including James Wan and Shawn Levy.
Other new releases this weekend include Nate Bargatze’s family-friendly comedy, “The Breadwinner,” and the war drama “Pressure.” While “The Breadwinner” earned $2.75 million on Friday across 3,525 North American theaters, it is projected to finish the weekend with about $7.5 million. The movie follows a dad navigating domestic chaos while his wife is away on a business trip.
“Pressure,” a WWII thriller starring Brendan Fraser as Dwight D. Eisenhower, came in sixth on Friday, grossing $2.46 million from 1,829 screens. Experts estimate it will make around $5.4 million by Sunday.
Continuing its strong run, “Obsession” by Curry Barker garnered $8.1 million in its third week, bringing in an expected total of $28 million over the holiday weekend. Meanwhile, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” earned $6.5 million, a significant drop from its debut. Its revised estimate now suggests it could total about $25 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic earnings to $136 million.
Lastly, Lionsgate’s “Michael” added $3.5 million, eyeing a total of $12.7 million for the weekend. This would push its domestic gross to $340 million over six weekends.
According to a recent survey by the National Association of Theater Owners, nearly 70% of moviegoers are excited about the growing variety of genres hitting theaters, signifying a shift in audience preferences. This trend could challenge traditional blockbuster formulas and spark creative innovation within the industry.
