Box Office Buzz: ‘Bad Guys 2’ Rakes in Over M, ‘Naked Gun’ Delivers .6M in Preview Earnings!

The first weekend of August is buzzing with new movies, and The Bad Guys 2 is stealing attention. It earned $2.25 million from its Thursday previews, which is an improvement over the original film’s $1.15 million. The first movie became a post-COVID hit, grossing nearly $24 million on its opening weekend. This time, analysts predict $20 million for the sequel.

The sequel’s production cost is $80 million, slightly higher than the original. The first film did well, making $97.4 million domestically and $152.9 million worldwide. Currently, The Bad Guys 2 holds an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a bit below the original’s 88%.

In another corner of the box office, Paramount is reviving classic comedies with its reboot of The Naked Gun. The film made $1.6 million on its opening night. Comparisons are being made to No Hard Feelings, which had a successful debut earlier this year. Directed by Akiva Schaffer, this new version has a production budget of $42 million.

Early audience reactions are promising, giving The Naked Gun 4.5 stars and a 73% recommendation rate. Its Rotten Tomatoes score stands at an impressive 90% for critics and 87% from audiences.

Neon’s romantic horror film Together, featuring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, earned $1.35 million on its second day, bringing its total to $4 million. The movie, bought for $16 million at Sundance, is forecasted to make between $8 million and $10 million over the weekend. Interestingly, it shares a similar trajectory with Midsommar, another A24 film, although it currently has better ratings.

Marvel Studios’ recent release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, debuted strongly with $158.3 million after its first week, despite a 14% drop in earnings on Thursday. With a budget of $200 million, it seems well on its way to becoming a blockbuster.

A new film called Kingdom opened recently, targeting a niche audience. It tells the story of an undercover cop in Sri Lanka, who faces moral dilemmas when he discovers that the criminal mastermind is his brother.

Here’s a look at the top earners this week:

  1. The Fantastic Four: First Steps – $158.3 million
  2. Superman – $37.7 million
  3. Jurassic World Rebirth – $20.3 million
  4. F1 – $9.8 million
  5. Smurfs – $9.3 million

As we dive deeper into movie trends, the industry seems to be recovering, with diverse genres drawing crowds back to theaters. It will be interesting to see if these trends continue in the coming weeks.

For industry insights, the Motion Picture Association has reported a consistent uptick in box office numbers, suggesting that audiences are keen to return to cinemas. The love for both new stories and classic revivals appears to be a winning formula for studios looking to reinvigorate their lineups.
