Box Office Buzz: ‘Caught Stealing’ Debuts with an Impressive .2 Million, While ‘Weapons’ Continues Its Winning Streak!

This weekend, several new films hit theaters, but most didn’t quite make a splash. The summer movie season is wrapping up, and “Weapons” is expected to take the top spot at the box office once again.

First up is “Caught Stealing,” a crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky. Opening across nearly 3,600 locations, it made about $3.2 million on its first day. Over the four-day Labor Day weekend, it’s projected to earn around $9.5 million. While critics say the film has strong qualities, its $40 million budget makes this debut feel underwhelming. Audience reactions were somewhat positive, with a “B” grade from CinemaScore.

Next is “The Roses,” an R-rated comedy from Searchlight Pictures. This film, directed by Jay Roach, is a fresh take on Warren Adler’s novel about a couple whose marriage turns sour. The original adaptation in 1989 scored a solid $86 million at the box office. However, times have changed. This new version, featuring stars like Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, earned $2.4 million on its first day and is on track for a four-day total of around $7 million. Critics have mixed reviews, but audience scores were a bit better, with a “B+” grade.

Meanwhile, the classic “Jaws” is back in theaters to celebrate its 50th anniversary, earning an impressive $3 million on opening day. Its four-day total might reach $9.7 million, showcasing that nostalgia still draws in crowds. Even though it had a re-release just three years ago, “Jaws” proves its lasting appeal.

As for the horror film “Weapons,” it continues to see success after losing the top spot to Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters” last week. It made $2.7 million on Friday, putting its total earnings close to $134 million. With strong word-of-mouth, it may soon surpass “Final Destination Bloodlines” to become the 12th-highest-grossing film of the year.

Disney’s “Freakier Friday,” which has been in theaters for nearly a month, remains in fourth place. It added $1.7 million and is likely heading toward an $82 million total.

Lastly, the unrated remake of “The Toxic Avenger” opened in nearly 2,000 venues. After facing distribution challenges, it made about $650,000 on opening day, likely placing it outside the top ten.

As seasons change, so do audience preferences. Box office trends suggest viewers are drawn to familiar stories, whether through nostalgia or well-loved genres. The dynamics of cinema continue to evolve, but strong narratives always find a way to resonate.
