Brad Pitt’s racing drama, “F1,” has revved up the box office, earning $88.4 million internationally and $144 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer alongside Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, the film tells the story of a retired driver (Pitt) who comes back to mentor a young rookie, played by Damson Idris, in a struggling team.

Outside North America, “F1” pulled in $55.6 million. The United Kingdom topped the charts with $9.2 million, followed by China with $9 million and Mexico at $6.7 million.

This film marks a pivotal win for Apple, which has previously struggled with big-screen releases like “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” With a hefty production budget nearing $250 million, “F1” needs to rake in more sales to break even. It’s on track to become Apple’s highest-grossing film, expected to surpass “Napoleon,” which earned $221 million globally. Thanks to solid reviews and word-of-mouth, “F1” could see continued success in theaters and later on Apple TV+.

Apple has partnered with Warner Bros. for the film’s distribution, meaning they’ll share in the box office revenue.

“F1” also showcases Imax’s capabilities, with Imax cameras filming its captivating racing scenes. The format accounted for $11.1 million internationally and $27.7 million globally, making up 19% of the film’s total revenue. This is one of the highest contributions Imax has seen for a feature film.

Zack Van Amburg, Apple’s head of worldwide video, shared, “‘F1’ captivates with its underdog story that blends thrilling racing and deep emotional arcs, thanks to the talented cast and crew.”

In contrast, Universal’s horror sequel “M3GAN 2.0” struggled, earning only $7 million internationally. The film didn’t capture the same audience enthusiasm as its predecessor, which grossed $180 million worldwide. With a budget of just $25 million, the latest installment will likely minimize losses.

Meanwhile, Universal has hit a high note with “How to Train Your Dragon,” which added $32 million internationally in its third weekend. The live-action remake now stands at $254 million overseas, showcasing a strong fanbase.

Family-friendly films have been dominating box office numbers. “Lilo & Stitch” grossed $13.1 million from 52 markets, bringing its global total to almost $950 million, inching toward the billion-dollar mark. There’s even a live-action sequel in the works.

On the flip side, Pixar’s “Elio” faced challenges, earning $11.4 million from 48 territories during its second weekend. After a disappointing start, it’s garnered a total of $73 million worldwide, far from its $150 million production budget. Positive buzz may help it in the long run, but it still struggles to find its footing.

Overall, while “F1” is racing ahead, the box office landscape displays a mix of triumphs and setbacks for new releases, illustrating the unpredictable nature of movie success.
