“Final Destination Bloodlines,” the sixth entry in the iconic horror series, kicked off with a massive $51 million during its opening weekend. It topped the box office, surpassing Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” and outperforming another newcomer, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” which landed in sixth place.
This installment, rated R, marks the franchise’s biggest launch to date, surpassing the 2009 film “The Final Destination,” which opened with $27 million. It’s been 14 years since the last film, “Final Destination 5,” hit theaters.
Globally, “Bloodlines” amassed another $51 million from 74 countries, bringing its worldwide total to $102 million. The film, directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, centers on a family facing a dark fate tied to a tragedy from 50 years ago. Viewers have rated it a “B+” on CinemaScore, which is commendable for such a grisly series, and it boasts an impressive 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“This is an outstanding opening for a sixth film in any horror series,” says analyst David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research. “The reviews are excellent, and audience reactions are very positive.”
Warner Bros. is enjoying a strong run, as “Bloodlines” is their third consecutive hit after “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners.” This turnaround is welcome after some recent box office disappointments.
In the same weekend, Warner Bros. had three films in the top five. “Sinners” claimed third place with $15.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $240.8 million. “A Minecraft Movie” followed closely, adding $5.9 million and taking its total earnings to nearly $928 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” directed by Trey Edward Shults and starring The Weeknd as a troubled musician, didn’t perform well. It earned just $3.3 million amid poor reviews and a low audience rating.
“Thunderbolts” slipped to second place with $16.5 million, and despite better reviews than some recent Marvel films, it’s struggling financially due to high production and marketing costs.
Year-to-date, ticket sales are up 15% compared to 2024 but still lag 32% behind pre-pandemic levels. Analysts expect upcoming releases like Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” and Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” to help improve these numbers during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Gross anticipates these releases will energize the market. “The projections are promising,” he notes, highlighting a potential rebound for the box office.
