Disney is back in the spotlight with “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” After a seven-year break, the latest Star Wars film made a big splash at the box office, earning $33 million on its opening day. It’s expected to rake in between $80 million and $100 million over the Memorial Day weekend.
Interestingly, if it hits that $100 million mark, it will match the opening weekend of 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” That film, however, didn’t meet expectations and was labeled a box office flop. In contrast, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is seen as a win for Disney. Analysts mostly point to franchise fatigue as a concern for Star Wars, especially with many fans turning to Disney+ shows like “Andor” and “Ahsoka,” which may have diluted the excitement for the theatrical releases.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the film follows a bounty hunter and his young sidekick trying to save Rotta the Hutt from a crime lord. It features star actors like Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver.
In a twist, Focus Features’ horror film “Obsession” has also performed surprisingly well, bucking the usual trend. After a solid opening, it’s on track to increase its earnings by 16% in its second weekend, expected to reach nearly $25 million over the holiday period.
Another notable release, “Michael,” a musical biopic, grossed over $300 million domestically and could surpass “Bohemian Rhapsody” as the highest-grossing musical biopic ever, currently sitting at around $788 million globally.
Meanwhile, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” continues to pull in audiences, bolstering its total to almost $200 million after just a month in theaters.
This weekend also introduced new films like “I Love Boosters,” a comedy about shoplifters starring Keke Palmer, and “Passenger,” a horror film featuring a couple haunted by a ghost after witnessing a tragic car crash.
As the box office landscape evolves, these films showcase the diverse offerings available to audiences today. With varying genres and unique storylines, moviegoers have plenty to choose from, highlighting trends in both franchise adaptations and original content.
