Box Office Buzz: ‘Predator: Badlands’ Launches with a Roaring $15.6 Million Opening Day!

“Predator: Badlands” is topping the box office, bringing in $15.6 million from Friday and preview screenings across 3,725 theaters. This is great news, especially considering earlier predictions expected an opening between $25 million and $30 million. For context, the recent “Alien: Romulus” debuted at $42 million, showing how strong these sci-fi revivals can be.

There’s a chance “Badlands” could become the biggest opening in the “Predator” franchise, surpassing the record held by “Alien vs. Predator,” which earned $38 million back in 2004. The last two films in the series went straight to streaming, so this theatrical release is significant. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film features newcomer Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as a young Predator and Elle Fanning as his android companion.

Disney invested $105 million in “Predator: Badlands,” including marketing costs. This budget is smaller than the hefty $180 million for the much-criticized “Tron: Ares.” Expectations for “Badlands” are higher, especially since it received an “A-” grade from CinemaScore, showing that audiences enjoyed it.

Among other releases this weekend, Amazon’s “Sarah’s Oil” is performing well, currently in fourth place with a projected $4.4 million. This film highlights the journey of one of the first Black female millionaires in the early 1900s and has received an impressive “A+” from CinemaScore, though critic reviews are sparse.

Sony’s historical drama “Nuremberg,” released in 1,802 theaters, has earned around $1.4 million. While reviews are generally positive, it hasn’t generated overwhelming excitement.

Mubi released “Die My Love,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, in 1,983 theaters. Although it’s their widest release yet, it only garnered about $1 million. Audience feedback wasn’t great, reflected in a “D+” CinemaScore.

Black Bear Pictures, making its distribution debut, released “Christy” starring Sydney Sweeney. Its performance has been weak, earning only $670,000, but it aims for award recognition, with respectable reviews.

In the meantime, Paramount’s “Regretting You” and Universal’s “Black Phone 2” are also doing well. “Regretting You” is expected to earn around $7.3 million this weekend, maintaining strong audience interest. “Black Phone 2” is projected to reach a total of $70 million, slightly trailing behind its predecessor.

In total, this weekend has shown a mix of successes and challenges for new releases. The cinematic landscape is shifting, with familiar franchises holding their ground and newer stories striving for attention amidst a crowded market.
