Summer is here, and it’s bringing some hot movie releases! This weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is making waves, raking in $114.6 million globally as of yesterday. It’s on track to potentially hit $180 million by tomorrow.
Looking at the numbers, international earnings stand at $82.1 million from 51 markets, while North America contributed $32.5 million, including previews. Friday alone brought in $27.5 million, taking advantage of Labor Day holidays in many places.
Directed by David Frankel, this sequel is leading the box office in almost every market except the Netherlands, South Africa, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Notably, it had the strongest opening day of the year in Japan. In fact, it enjoyed big success in other countries too: Brazil, Italy, and Korea all reported impressive figures, making up a significant share of their weekend revenues.
Italy is particularly shining, contributing $9.7 million and capturing 78% of the market share. Brazil isn’t far behind with $6.6 million at 72%, while Mexico has pulled in $6.3 million, marking its second-best opening day of the year.
Germany reported $4.9 million, claiming half of the weekend’s market share. China also came in strong with $4.9 million, outperforming Michael from the previous weekend.
France, the UK, and Australia followed suit with $4.6 million, $4 million, and $4.5 million respectively. Each of these regions saw the highest opening days of the year, indicating a strong appetite for the sequel.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s Michael has also made headlines, becoming the second-highest grossing musical biopic of all time at $300 million, just behind Bohemian Rhapsody. By this weekend’s end, it’s expected to reach a worldwide total of approximately $413.3 million.
As audiences flock to theaters, experts suggest the strong performance could reflect a broader trend in box office resilience post-pandemic. Recent research shows that 73% of moviegoers feel comfortable returning to cinemas, highlighting the industry’s rebound potential.
