Sunday marks a highlight in Hollywood with the Oscars, but the excitement isn’t translating to the box office this weekend. Focus Features’ underwater thriller, “Last Breath,” is expected to open at $7.3 million. Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World” is likely to hold the top spot for the third consecutive week, even though its popularity is fading.
“Last Breath” made $3 million on Friday from preview screenings across 3,018 theaters. This gripping survival story follows a real rescue mission by deep-sea divers. Directed by Alex Parkinson, who also made the original documentary in 2019, the film features well-known actors like Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole. Focus acquired the distribution rights last summer.
Early reviews for “Last Breath” are promising, with audiences giving it a B+ grade from Cinema Score. Adult dramas have struggled to attract crowds lately, so Focus is hopeful that positive feedback can help the film gain momentum in the coming weeks.
On the other hand, “Captain America: Brave New World” is projected to stay at No. 1, despite a rough 68% drop in its last weekend—a notable decline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film brought in another $3.6 million on Friday, a steep drop from the previous week. It’s expected to cross the $150 million mark domestically. Soon, it will surpass “Eternals,” which grossed $164 million, placing it among the lower ranks of Marvel films.
In third place is Neon’s horror comedy “The Monkey,” which is seeing a significant decline in its second weekend after a lukewarm reception, earning it a C+ grade on Cinema Score. It totals around $1.8 million on Friday and is expected to finish with about $6.2 million for the weekend. This is a sharper drop than the director’s previous hit, “Longlegs,” which had a more stable performance.
Despite this decline, “The Monkey” was made on a budget of about $10 million, giving it a chance to exceed $24 million by the end of the weekend. In fourth place, “Paddington in Peru” earned approximately $970,000 on Friday, projecting a total of $4.5 million for its third weekend. It is slightly outperforming “Paddington 2” from 2017, with a domestic total expected to hit $31 million.
Lastly, Universal’s “Dog Man” is likely to round out the top five, bringing in around $860,000 on Friday. Even after a month in theaters and being available for digital rental, it’s projected to earn about $4 million, with a chance to surpass $83 million overall.
