Disney’s “Tron: Ares” opened at the box office this weekend but fell short of expectations. The film made $14.3 million from its Friday and preview showings across 4,000 theaters, which include early screenings. Originally, predictions had been for the movie to debut above $45 million, but now it seems unlikely to reach that figure. To compare, the previous film in the series, “Tron: Legacy,” earned $17.5 million on its opening day back in 2010.
Reviews for “Ares” haven’t been great. A Cinema Score survey gave it a “B+,” indicating a mixed reaction from audiences. Disney invested heavily in this project, spending $180 million to revive the franchise. While it aims to attract international viewers, it needs to perform well at home to break even. The original “Tron” was a modest hit in 1982, landing as the 22nd largest release in North America that year, while “Legacy” went on to gross $400 million globally.
“The Roofman,” starring Channing Tatum, opened in second place, making $3.25 million from 3,362 locations. This film is based on true events and is expected to earn at least $8 million overall. Miramax produced “Roofman” on a lean $19 million budget and marketed it with a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also received a Cinema Score of “B+,” which might help generate good word-of-mouth.
The film follows Tatum’s character, a wannabe criminal who robs multiple McDonald’s locations. The cast includes notable actors like Kirsten Dunst and Peter Dinklage.
Meanwhile, Sony’s “Soul on Fire” is hoping to place fifth after earning $1.3 million through Friday and previews. The film seeks to resonate with faith-based audiences; early reactions suggest they are pleased, scoring an “A” on Cinema Score.
On a different note, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” struggled, bringing in just $343,000. This adaptation of the musical had a mixed reception at the Sundance Film Festival and is expected to fall short of profitability due to its higher-than-average budget.
In its ongoing run, Warner Bros.’ “One Battle After Another” made $2 million, showing a decline as it competed with “Tron: Ares” for theater space. With a domestic total nearing $49.8 million, its road to profitability appears steep.
Notably, Universal’s “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” remained stable with $920,000, while “The Conjuring: Last Rites” continued to perform well, earning $900,000 on Friday and reaching a total of $170.4 million domestically. Conversely, “The Smashing Machine,” starring Dwayne Johnson, suffered a significant drop, earning around $530,000, a 72% decrease from last week.
As audiences react to these new releases, filmmakers and studios will undoubtedly be watching closely. Clearly, the box office landscape remains dynamic, with diverse stories vying for audience attention.
