SATURDAY UPDATE: The box office is having a mixed weekend. As of now, total earnings for 2025 have crossed the $1 billion mark, seeing an 11% increase from last year. However, this weekend’s estimated take is around $55.5 million, making it one of the lowest of the year, just above the Super Bowl weekend’s $54.2 million. Last year, Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part Two led the box office with $82.5 million during this time.
Next weekend, we’ll see the release of Mickey 17, a sci-fi film from acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho, known for the Oscar-winning Parasite.
In this weekend’s box office leaderboard, Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World takes the top spot with a projected $14.5 million to $15.5 million, marking a 47% drop from last weekend. This decline is partly due to the film’s availability in Imax theaters. Meanwhile, Focus Features’ deep-sea thriller starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu, Last Breath, is expected to earn about $7.3 million in its opening weekend, garnering solid reviews with a B+ rating and 61% recommendation rate.
The Monkey from NEON seems to be holding better than expected with an estimated $6.2 million this weekend, showing a 55% drop in ticket sales.
For Last Breath, demographics show that 51% of its audience is male, with 53% of viewers over the age of 35. The film notably attracted a diverse audience, including 23% Latino and Hispanic viewers. The best-performing theaters are in areas like South Central and the Mountain West, with AMC Century City leading in box office returns.
Despite its strong reviews, the film’s pre-release social media presence was only about 60% of typical thriller genre levels, totaling 37.2 million across platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
In terms of marketing, Focus Features spent approximately $5.1 million on TV ads for Last Breath. This is about half of what they spent on their second-highest grossing film, Nosferatu.
GKIDS released the Japanese animated film Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX-Beginning in 780 locations, earning about $1 million in its opening weekend with modest sales in major cities like Los Angeles and New York.
As the box office remains slow, many audiences might opt for the comfort of their own homes this Sunday as the Oscars take place.

It’s projected to earn high single digits this weekend, while Captain America: Brave New World is expected to maintain its hold at number one with around $14 million, thanks to its Imax screenings. Despite facing stiff competition, Last Breath has solid reviews at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has extended its reach to 3,011 theaters overall.
NEON’s The Monkey is expected to drop approximately 60% after its first weekend, while Paddington in Peru is performing slightly better than its predecessor at the same point.
Overall, this weekend looks to be a quiet one in theaters as audiences may turn their attention to the Oscars for their entertainment fix.
