El Niño is forming more quickly than expected in the Pacific Ocean, and it could become a “Super” El Niño by this fall or winter. According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, there’s a two in three chance of it peaking strong or very strong.

So, what exactly is El Niño? It’s a natural climate pattern that arises when the tropical Pacific Ocean warms significantly. This warming disrupts wind patterns and affects weather around the globe. Some areas may face droughts and heat waves, while others might get heavy rain and flooding. Strong El Niños can also influence the Atlantic hurricane season and contribute to rising global temperatures.

Typically, El Niño occurs every two to seven years and lasts about nine to twelve months. It gains strength based on how much warmer the ocean temperatures get compared to average. A “very strong” or Super El Niño occurs when temperatures exceed two degrees Celsius above average.

Currently, ocean temperatures are just below this threshold but are expected to rise soon. This trend indicates a strengthening El Niño as we move through summer and fall, with a 96% likelihood of lasting into winter. A significant warm water pool has developed in the Pacific, which adds to this confidence.

However, there’s still uncertainty about how strong it might get. Forecasts have boosted the chances of a Super El Niño developing from one in four last month to one in three now. Michelle L’Heureux, an expert in El Niño forecasting, highlights that synchronicity between ocean temperature increases and atmospheric changes is critical for strength.

Some models predict that this Super El Niño could surpass previous records, including the one seen in 2015-2016, which is still considered the strongest on record. Other strong El Niños occurred in 1997-1998, 1982-1983, and 1972-1973.

Even if this year’s event doesn’t reach “super” status, it’s still expected to have considerable effects. A strong El Niño can profoundly impact weather patterns. Here are some potential outcomes:

  • Hurricane Season: A strong El Niño often reduces tropical storms and hurricanes in the Caribbean while increasing activity in the central and eastern Pacific, potentially affecting the U.S. Southwest and Hawaii.
  • Winter Effects in the U.S.: Warmer winters are typical in the northern U.S. and Canada. In contrast, the southern U.S. can expect cooler, wetter conditions.
  • Global Weather Extremes: In summer, monsoon rains may lessen in India and Southeast Asia, while drought conditions could worsen in the Caribbean and parts of Africa.

Historically, the 2015-2016 Super El Niño caused substantial drought in the Caribbean but didn’t lead to the expected wetter conditions in Southern California. This illustrates that even strong El Niños can yield unexpected outcomes.

Experts predict that El Niño might contribute to 2026 or 2027 being the warmest years on record. In fact, NOAA recently stated that 2023 is very likely to be among the five warmest years recorded, even before considering the effects of El Niño.
