Strong to severe storms are expected later today in parts of Oregon and Washington, especially east of the Cascades. As the day heats up, humidity moving in from the southeast will trigger storms across southeastern Oregon. These storms are likely to shift northwest as the afternoon progresses.
By early afternoon, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of central and eastern Oregon and western Idaho. According to the Storm Prediction Center, there’s a risk of severe weather, including high winds and even a small chance of tornadoes. Meteorologist Bobby Corser notes, “The biggest threat comes from strong winds near intense thunderstorms.” Some storms may produce gusts exceeding 75 mph.
The region is also at risk for large hail, measuring an inch or larger. Anticipate that storms will begin to weaken overnight after they combine into larger clusters.
Although earlier forecasts suggested thunderstorms might reach the Portland area, it now seems less likely. However, a few storms could still drift into the Willamette Valley later in the day, primarily bringing lightning.
