A fierce winter storm is hitting a large part of the U.S., with temperatures plummeting to record lows in some areas. This intense weather system is causing extreme cold, particularly impacting regions that don’t typically face such chills.
In Florida, temperatures recently dipped into the 20s, marking the coldest day since 1989, as noted by the National Weather Service. They’ve warned of “bitterly cold air” moving south, which can be quite surprising for residents. “All of our climate sites set new record lows,” the NWS office in Melbourne tweeted, showcasing how unusual this cold snap has been.
Brian McNoldy, a cyclone expert at the University of Miami, highlighted that Florida isn’t well-prepared for such frigid temperatures. “Most homes lack heat, and many don’t own heavy coats,” he explained. Despite the cold, some Floridians embraced outdoor activities, like golfing and running. David Nolan, another scientist from the University of Miami, noted that cold snaps were once more common. “We had much colder winters in the early ’80s,” he said, echoing a nostalgia for such seasonal transformations.
The cold isn’t just affecting people; it’s also impacting the local wildlife. Recently, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued an executive order to allow the capture of cold-stunned iguanas. These cold-blooded reptiles can fall from trees when temperatures drop too low, posing hazards to anyone below.
Meanwhile, in the Carolinas, the situation is more severe. Charlotte, North Carolina, saw over a foot of snow due to the bomb cyclone. This amount is higher than what typically falls during an entire season. The impact has led to significant flight cancellations, with more than 840 flights tossed aside by Sunday afternoon—a clear sign of the storm’s disruption.
Authorities are urging residents to stay off the roads. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein emphasized this message during a briefing, highlighting the uncharacteristic nature of the storm in the state. As the storm progressed, officials reported over 1,000 traffic accidents, unfortunately leading to two fatalities.
The widespread effects of the storm could be felt far beyond the Carolinas. Tens of thousands remained without power across Mississippi and Tennessee, with lives lost due to the harsh conditions. In Mississippi alone, over 50,000 customers were left in the dark, and 23 people have died due to the winter storm. Tennessee reported over 30,000 power outages and 21 deaths.
