Everyone’s buzzing about the bitter cold. Environment Canada says we won’t get a break from it until early February.
Our local weather has been a mix lately. We’ve felt warm spells followed by sharp drops, and right now, temperatures are sinking to around -20°C. People are adapting, though. At Waterdown Memorial Park in Hamilton, families bundled up to enjoy the winter.
“I kinda like it,” one parent shared. “It’s fresh, and the kids finally get to play outside.” For some, though, winter seems like a countdown until warmth returns.
“I was loving our brief warm spell earlier this week,” another parent admitted. “I was looking forward to tobogganing.”
David Phillips, a climatologist from Environment and Climate Change Canada, noted how unusual this winter is. “We’ve had about 100 cm of snow in the Hamilton area, which is 35% more than usual.”
He also warned that frigid temperatures, dipping to -23°C, are ahead. “In St. Catharines and Welland, a hefty snow squall is expected. Winds from Lake Erie are creating lake effect snow, which could bring 20 to 40 cm more tonight and Monday.”
For those who must travel, police are stressing the importance of preparation. “Make sure your vehicle is clear of ice and snow, drive slowly, and be cautious—conditions can change quickly,” advised OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk.
Despite the chill, the Skate Shack at Waterdown Memorial Park is a hit. Skaters didn’t let the cold stop them. But not everyone was thrilled with the temperature. “I absolutely hate it. Cold weather is the worst,” said one skater bundled in layers.
So, if you’re dreaming of a warm-up, the forecast looks bleak. We might have to wait until February for a break from these low temperatures.
As climate patterns shift, these extremes could become more common. According to recent studies from the World Meteorological Organization, regions are experiencing more severe weather. The sad truth is, what we’re dealing with now might just be a preview of winters to come.
