Before F1: The Movie zoomed into theaters last week, Brad Pitt had a different racing project in mind. He was originally set to star alongside Tom Cruise in Ford v Ferrari.
In a recent interview with The National, Pitt shared his excitement about the possibility of reuniting with his Interview with the Vampire co-star in the future. He explained that they were both eager to take on the roles in Ford v Ferrari about a decade ago. However, their plans took a detour when Cruise realized his character wouldn’t be doing much driving.
Pitt explained, “Tom and I were on Ford v Ferrari with Joe [the director]. It was about 10 years before the film actually got made.” He added, “Tom wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to be Ken Miles. But when Tom found out that Carroll Shelby wouldn’t be doing much driving, he backed out of the project.”
Eventually, the roles went to Christian Bale and Matt Damon, with James Mangold directing.
Looking ahead, Pitt touched on rumors about a potential sequel to F1. He mentioned he’d love to drive again, but noted that his character, Sonny Hayes, steps away from Formula One by the film’s end. He expressed interest in collaborating on a sequel to Cruise’s 1990 racing film, Days of Thunder. Recent reports indicate that Cruise is indeed considering a follow-up to the beloved NASCAR classic.
Pitt added, “F1 should focus on Joshua Pierce—played by Damson Idris—and the team’s road to the championship. I’m not sure where Sonny fits into that picture. Maybe he’s off on the Bonneville Salt Flats, breaking speed records.”
This insight into Pitt’s past and future roles sheds light on how Hollywood projects evolve over time. The changing dynamics in the film industry, with high-profile stars or directors dropping in and out, create a unique landscape of possibilities. As fans, we can look forward to seeing how these projects unfold and what new stories may come to life.
