Bradley Cooper is set to direct and star in an upcoming prequel to the Ocean’s franchise, along with Margot Robbie. Warner Bros. announced the project during their CinemaCon presentation, but the film still lacks a title. It’s scheduled to release on June 25, 2027. Cooper, fresh off directing Is This Thing On?, will produce the film with Robbie’s LuckyChap production company.
Robbie joined the presentation virtually, revealing that the film will explore the backstory of Danny Ocean’s parents, who played key roles in shaping his skills as a master thief. The plot centers around an impressive heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.
Warner Bros. also announced several release dates for upcoming projects. These include horror sequels like The Revenge of La Llorona and Evil Dead Wrath, along with a fresh Final Destination sequel. Additionally, a prequel to Game of Thrones, titled Aegon’s Conquest, is also on the way.
Lee Isaac Chung was initially set to direct the Ocean’s prequel but stepped down recently due to creative differences. Both Warner Bros. and LuckyChap praised Chung for his unique vision and indicated a desire to collaborate on future projects.
The Ocean’s franchise began in 2001 with Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven, which was a modern take on the 1960 classic featuring Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. Soderbergh’s trilogy featured stars like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts, wrapping up in 2007 with Ocean’s Thirteen. In 2018, Ocean’s Eight introduced a female-led cast and garnered positive attention.
The interest in prequels has been growing in Hollywood, often reflecting a trend where studios look to capitalize on successful franchises. A recent survey indicated that 68% of viewers prefer familiar stories, suggesting that audiences appreciate the rich backgrounds of characters they love.
As this new Ocean’s film takes shape, it will be intriguing to see how it brings fresh perspectives while still paying homage to its roots. The blend of nostalgia and innovation could set the stage for a successful release.
