Brady Corbet Reveals He Earned ‘Zero’ from ‘The Brutalist’ – The Shocking Truth Behind the Film’s Finances

The Brutalist director Brady Corbet recently shared that he made “zero dollars” from his Oscar-nominated film. It’s a surprising statement coming from someone in the spotlight.

During an episode of WTF With Marc Maron, Corbet explained that he finally earned some money by directing a few advertisements in Portugal. “It’s the first time I had made any money in years,” he said.

Corbet and his wife, Mona Fastvold, who is also his creative partner, haven’t profited from their last two films. Before The Brutalist, they worked on Vox Lux in 2018.

While The Brutalist received 10 Academy Award nominations—including best actor for Adrien Brody and best supporting actress for Felicity Jones—Corbet revealed that many filmmakers, even those nominated this year, struggle financially. “I’ve talked to others who can’t pay their rent,” he said.

Corbet explained that filmmakers aren’t compensated for promoting their films. He has spent months on the press circuit since his film premiered in September. “It feels like a six-month interrogation,” he noted, reflecting on a grueling schedule that included 90 interviews in just one week.

“It’s non-stop,” he said, describing his week filled with travel and work. “I haven’t had a day off since Christmas. It was just four short days.” Despite his film’s acclaim, the financial reality for many directors remains tough. Filmmaking can be a demanding journey, with passion often overshadowed by financial strain.
