Braves Catcher Sean Murphy Out 4-6 Weeks: Impact of His Cracked Rib on the Team

The Braves were doing well this spring until Monday morning. They announced that starting catcher Sean Murphy cracked a rib and will be out for 4 to 6 weeks.

Murphy got hurt during an exhibition game when a fastball hit him at 94.6 mph. This injury means he will likely miss the rest of spring training and possibly the early part of the season as well. The Braves kick off their season with seven games on the West Coast against San Diego and Los Angeles.

With Murphy sidelined, Drake Baldwin may step in as the starting catcher. There’s also the possibility that the Braves will use Curt Casali alongside Chadwick Tromp if Murphy’s recovery is quicker than expected.

This injury is just another setback for Murphy since he joined the Braves. Last season, he suffered an oblique strain on opening day and missed two months of play. Even after returning, he struggled at the plate while sharing time with Travis d’Arnaud. He also missed a few games in the summer of 2023 because of a hamstring issue. Let’s hope this cracked rib heals fast, and Murphy can get back on the field soon.
