Brazilian Chief Justice Rizwana Champions Judges’ Conference on Environmental Issues

Chief Justice Antonio Herman Benjamin of Brazil’s National High Court met with Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan in Dhaka on Monday. The Brazilian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Paulo Fernando Dias Feres, also attended the meeting.

They discussed how to improve environmental governance and judicial cooperation. Their focus was on tackling climate change, protecting biodiversity, and managing forests sustainably.

Justice Benjamin, who is well-known for his expertise in environmental law, shared Brazil’s experience in creating laws to safeguard forests and promote climate justice. In turn, Adviser Rizwana talked about Bangladesh’s efforts to protect natural resources. She highlighted initiatives aimed at reducing plastic pollution and conserving biodiversity, especially in critical areas like the Sundarbans and Jaflong.

Both leaders acknowledged their countries’ commitment to international environmental agreements. They agreed that judicial activism is crucial for enforcing environmental laws and achieving sustainable development.

The conversation also explored the importance of engaging youth and local communities in building climate resilience, reflecting Bangladesh’s strategy to involve stakeholders in conservation efforts.

Justice Benjamin praised Bangladesh’s proactive approach to environmental issues. He expressed a desire to enhance cooperation between the two countries on legal and policy matters related to environmental protection. He suggested holding a conference for judges focused on environmental and forest protection, which Adviser Rizwana was eager to support.

Ambassador Feres reiterated Brazil’s readiness to work with Bangladesh to address common challenges, especially in the fight against deforestation.
