Brazil has laid out its public policy for environmental and climate protection for 2023–2025. The results were shared at a ministerial meeting in Brasilia, with key insights highlighted by Rui Costa, Chief of Staff of the Brazilian Presidency.
Costa emphasized the government’s commitment to environmental issues. They have made strides in reducing deforestation, expanding protective measures, and improving climate governance. According to the Legal Amazon Deforestation Satellite Monitoring Project (PRODES), deforestation in the Amazon plummeted by 50% by 2025. In the Cerrado biome, the decrease was 32.3% when compared to 2022. These efforts have prevented the release of 733.9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, and Brazil has restored 3.4 million hectares of natural vegetation.
In a boost for the economy, Brazil opened around 500 new international markets for agricultural products, generating an extra $3.4 billion in export revenue. Costa pointed out that the environmental policies have fostered global trust in Brazil’s agro-industrial sector.
Another key aspect of this period was the recognition of indigenous lands. Brazil completed demarcation processes for 20 territories and created 10 new reservations, totaling 51 recognized areas. This focus not only helps preserve biodiversity but also supports indigenous communities.
Experts agree that these policies could set an important precedent for balancing environmental health with economic growth. A recent survey indicated that 76% of Brazilians support more aggressive action on climate change, reflecting a growing public concern for sustainability.
