Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is ready to respond to the U.S. if tariffs are imposed on Brazilian goods. This comes after President Donald Trump threatened to introduce a staggering 50% import tax set to start on August 1. Trump’s reason for this potential tariff is Brazil’s treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently facing legal issues in Brazil for allegedly trying to stage a coup following his election defeat by Lula in 2022.
Trump labeled Bolsonaro as “a highly respected leader,” urging Brazil to halt what he calls a “witch hunt” against him. Their longstanding alliance isn’t surprising given their shared views on various issues.
This isn’t the first time Trump has challenged Brazil over Bolsonaro’s treatment. He has previously compared Brazil’s actions to legal challenges he has faced in the United States. In response to the tariff threat, Lula fired back on social media, emphasizing Brazil’s sovereignty. He made it clear that any increases in U.S. tariffs would lead to retaliatory measures against American goods.
The stakes are high. The U.S. is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner after China. If tariffs rise from 10% to 50%, Brazil stands to lose significantly. Lula contested Trump’s claim about the U.S. having a trade deficit with Brazil, noting that U.S. trade data for 2024 shows a surplus of $7.4 billion.
On the flip side, the U.S. imports gas, coffee, and iron from Brazil, making the trade relations particularly important for both countries.
Brazil wasn’t the only nation issued threats from Trump; other countries, including Japan and South Korea, received similar warnings. However, the letter to Brazil stood out because it included issues beyond trade, touching on social media censorship practices in Brazil. Trump accused the Brazilian government of imposing unfair restrictions, which sparked further debate.
Lula justified these restrictions by arguing they are aimed at preventing hate speech and protecting human rights. Political experts like Rafael Cortez believe that Trump’s political letter might actually bolster Lula domestically, similar to how other leaders have gained support by confronting Trump.
