On March 8, the Vande Bharat Express made history by being operated entirely by an all-women crew. This special journey ran from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Shirdi in honor of International Women’s Day.
The train, numbered 22223, departed at 6:20 AM. It was truly remarkable to see women manage every aspect of the operation—from the engine to the catering service. Surekha Yadav, Asia’s first woman loco pilot, led the team. She was joined by assistant loco pilot Sangeeta Kumari and operations supervisor Shweta Ghone.
A dedicated group of female Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) played key roles, including Anushka KP, MJ Rajput, Sarika Ojha, Suvarna Pashte, Kavita Maral, and Manisha Ram. Together, they contributed to the smooth running of the train.
Central Railway celebrated this achievement on social media, highlighting it as a major milestone for women in the railway sector. This initiative reflects the ongoing efforts to encourage gender inclusivity and promote diverse job opportunities in Indian Railways.
The all-women crew not only showcased the skills and capabilities of women in traditionally male-dominated roles but also served as an inspiring example for future generations. By making this leap, Indian Railways is paving the way for more women to pursue careers in various sectors.
This significant event is a reminder of the strength and resilience of women. It celebrates their achievements and encourages ongoing efforts for equality in the workforce.
