On International Women’s Day, a notable milestone was achieved on Indian Railways. For the first time, the Vande Bharat Express was run entirely by an all-women crew. The train, No. 22223 from CSMT to Sainagar Shirdi, left Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 6:20 am.
The journey was skillfully managed by women at every level. Surekha Yadav piloted the train, assisted by Sangeeta Kumari. Shweta Ghone oversaw operations, while a team of women Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) handled ticketing. This included head examiners Anushka KP and MJ Rajput, along with Sarika Ojha, Suvarna Pashte, Kavita Maral, and Manisha Ram.
This initiative not only highlights the talent and capabilities of women in Indian Railways but also paves the way for more gender representation in the industry. Railway officials noted this step supports a larger goal of empowering women and creating inclusive job opportunities.
The Vande Bharat Express is celebrated for its speed, efficiency, and modern comforts. This historic journey further demonstrates the commitment to breaking gender norms in traditionally male-dominated roles.
March 8 is also significant beyond this achievement. It’s International Women’s Day, a global observance celebrating women’s contributions and advocating for gender equality. The theme for 2025, “Accelerate Action,” emphasizes the urgency of advancing gender equality. According to a World Economic Forum report, if progress continues at the current rate, true equality may not be reached until 2158, highlighting the call for immediate action.
