Breaking Barriers: Two Indian Navy Women Officers Complete Historic 50,000 KM ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama II’ Journey Across 4 Continents and 3 Oceans!

Two female officers from the Indian Navy have made waves by completing an incredible journey across the world’s largest oceans. Lieutenant Commander Roopa A and Lieutenant Commander Dilna K have just finished their circumnavigation of the globe on the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini. They are expected to return to Goa today, May 29, 2025, after setting sail on October 2, 2024, from Goa.

Their amazing voyage measures about 25,400 nautical miles, equivalent to nearly 50,000 kilometers, and took them through extreme weather and challenging seas for eight months. Known affectionately as #DilRoo, the duo visited notable ports like Fremantle in Australia and Cape Town in South Africa, engaging in diplomatic outreach and connecting with locals, naval cadets, and students.

This journey is significant for India, showcasing maritime ambition and women’s empowerment in the armed forces. During a flag-in ceremony at Mormugao Port, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will honor their accomplishments and the spirit behind the mission, highlighted by the motto “Courageous Hearts Boundless Seas.”

Their journey faced formidable challenges, especially during the leg through the Drake Passage, where they braved three cyclones. Winds swelled to 50 knots (93 km/h), testing their sailing skills and endurance. Despite this, they emerged resilient, embodying courage and perseverance amidst nature’s wrath.

As part of their experience, they were honored as special guests at the Western Australian Parliament, earning recognition for their achievements. Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, praised their skills and teamwork during multiple interactions throughout the expedition.

This voyage not only celebrates individual triumph but also represents a push for inclusivity in a traditionally male-dominated field. Such milestones highlight the growing role women play in national security, fostering a community of empowerment within the defense sector.
