The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to trade star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. In return, the 49ers will receive a fifth-round draft pick. This trade won’t be finalized until Samuel passes a physical and the 2025 league year begins on March 12. Samuel’s contract runs through 2026, though both teams may consider an extension later.
Washington now has six draft picks, including No. 29, and three within the top 80. However, they’ve traded away their fourth and fifth-round selections due to this move and a past deal for cornerback Marshon Lattimore.
Samuel struggled with injuries during the 2024 season, ending with 806 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns, which are his lowest totals since 2020. Over his six seasons with the 49ers, he averaged 59.2 receiving yards per game and was named a first-team All-Pro in 2021 after achieving a career-high of 1,405 receiving yards. He also contributed significantly in rushing, with 365 yards and eight touchdowns that same year.
San Francisco allowed Samuel and his agent to pursue trade options in early February after Samuel requested a change following the team’s exit meetings. General Manager John Lynch mentioned that the team remains on good terms with Samuel despite the request. “He makes game-changing plays,” Lynch said. “But time happens.” Samuel was picked by the 49ers in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
In return for Samuel, Washington explored trading defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. Allen is a two-time Pro Bowler, and his name emerged in discussions about the deal.
So, what can Washington expect from Samuel? His performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 16, where he recorded seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, proves he still has skills to offer. While he may not be the ideal No. 1 receiver and struggles against man coverage, he excels against zone defenses, making him a valuable asset alongside a strong route runner. With Terry McLaurin on the team, who also showcases deep skills, Samuel will have a partner to complement his game. Interestingly, both players showcased their talent together at the 2019 Senior Bowl.
Washington wants to boost its offense, and Samuel brings a unique skill set that combines receiving with running back attributes. This was an emphasis made by Coach Dan Quinn at the recent NFL combine. Even with limited resources, Washington’s up-tempo offense ranked fifth in the league last season, averaging over 28 points per game. They will need to address the receiver situation, especially since their next four receivers are free agents and McLaurin currently stands as the primary option.
Samuel’s health is crucial, as he battled rib and calf injuries last season. If the Commanders’ medical staff clears him before finalizing the trade, they will gain a player with a style that fits their competitive nature. Washington’s General Manager Adam Peters knows Samuel well, having overseen his draft pick and development in San Francisco. Samuel’s aggressive playing style aligns with Washington’s intentions to be dynamic on offense.
For the 49ers, this trade means they gain a fifth-round pick, adding to their expected 11 selections in the upcoming draft. If they aim to find a player who can fill Samuel’s role, TCU receiver Savion Williams might be a wise choice. Standing at 6-foot-4, Williams scored six times each through receptions and rushing last season. San Francisco has a history of success in the fifth round, having drafted notable players like George Kittle and Dre Greenlaw.
