Homeownership costs vary significantly by location. In 2024, residents in Washington D.C. faced the highest median monthly costs at $3,181. Other expensive states include California, where monthly payments topped $3,000, and Hawaii at $2,937. In addition, the median gross rent across the U.S. was $1,487, a rise of 2.7% from the previous year.
