The Detroit Lions have traded veteran running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans. In return, they receive fourth- and seventh-round draft picks and center Juice Scruggs.
Montgomery, 28, was part of a strong duo with Jahmyr Gibbs in Detroit. However, his role diminished over the past season. He only had 158 rush attempts last year, the lowest of his career, compared to 219 in 2023. Lions general manager Brad Holmes admitted that Montgomery’s frustration was apparent as Gibbs took the lead.
“I’ve been in touch with David’s agent,” Holmes said during the NFL combine. “We love David. We would love to have him, but a player has to want to be at a certain place.”
By trading Montgomery, the Lions can give more playing time to the younger Gibbs, who is just 23 years old. Montgomery’s contract included significant salary cap hits of $8.4 million and $10.2 million for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
In Houston, Montgomery joins Woody Marks, who had a solid rookie season with 911 yards and five touchdowns. Marks, 25, still has three years left on his contract.
Montgomery started his career with the Chicago Bears after being drafted in 2019. He has two 1,000-yard rushing seasons and scored 33 rushing touchdowns for the Lions.
Last season, the Texans ranked 18th in total offense, while the Lions were fifth. Montgomery’s departure could impact both teams significantly.
