Now, Joe Dumars has stepped in as the new head executive.

Despite Griffin’s desire to replace head coach Willie Green earlier this year, ownership decided against it. Now, with Dumars at the helm, he is expected to keep Green on as the head coach. Green has led the Pelicans to two playoff appearances in four seasons, including a notable 49-win season last year—the second-highest win total in the team’s history. Unfortunately, injuries have been a significant hurdle this season.

Interestingly, Dumars has a history with Green. While with the Detroit Pistons, he was impressed enough to host Green for workouts and almost drafted him back in 2003. This connection might play a role in their current working relationship, especially since Green still has backing from Pelicans ownership. Reports suggest that the Phoenix Suns have shown interest in Green, who has ties to star player Devin Booker from their time together in Phoenix.

While Green’s position seems secure, changes are likely for his coaching staff. For example, associate head coach James Borrego might pursue opportunities with other teams this summer. If Griffin had stayed, it’s believed he would have replaced Green with Borrego.

The Pelicans could also see some new faces in their front office. Dumars may consider bringing in his long-time colleague Scott Perry from the Pistons and Ryan Hoover from the Bucks. Perry has his own connection to Green, as he was with the Orlando Magic during Green’s playing career.
