The University of Wisconsin-Madison has made a strong comeback in national research rankings, now sitting at fifth place for research spending—its best ranking since 2014. This rise is notable after the university fell from the top five for the first time in nearly 45 years. In 2018, it dropped to eighth place, a decline attributed to state budget cuts and staffing challenges.
Mark Bugher, a former director of University Research Park, expressed the importance of this ranking. He noted it reflects UW-Madison’s status as a leading research institution—a reputation that is crucial for attracting top talent and funding.
In the latest report from the National Science Foundation, UW-Madison’s research expenditure exceeded $1.9 billion, representing a 12% increase from the previous year. Almost half of this funding came from federal grants, notably from agencies like the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin acknowledged the significance of the top-five ranking, stating that it enhances the university’s visibility and appeal.
Research rankings matter. They influence faculty recruitment, facility upgrades, and the university’s ability to secure substantial grants. UW-Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s other research university, is ranked 221st, having spent approximately $66 million on research, up from $61 million last year.
As we look ahead, next year’s rankings will reflect a time when many universities faced federal funding cuts. The current administration has initiated budget changes, eliminating certain programs, particularly those focused on diversity and climate initiatives. This context could impact future research capabilities and rankings.
