Amazon is gearing up for another round of layoffs, with plans to cut around 30,000 corporate positions. This move follows an earlier reduction of about 14,000 jobs last year. These cuts will impact roles across various departments, including Amazon Web Services, retail, and human resources.
Why is this happening? Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, said it’s not mainly about finances or artificial intelligence. Instead, he highlighted a need to streamline the company’s structure, citing too much bureaucracy as a problem. He noted that as organizations grow, they often add more layers, making them less efficient.
Interestingly, while AI is changing the job landscape, Jassy emphasized that the layoffs are more about cultural shifts within the company. Companies are increasingly using AI to automate tasks and reduce their workforce. A report from consulting firm McKinsey found that 45% of jobs could be affected by automation in the next decade. In this context, Amazon’s decision reflects a larger trend in the business world.
These upcoming layoffs mark the largest in Amazon’s history, representing nearly 10% of its corporate workforce, which totals about 1.58 million globally. Most of Amazon’s employees work in warehouses, but corporate roles are crucial for driving innovation and managing operations.
In 2022, the company faced similar challenges, laying off about 27,000 employees. Workers affected in the previous round were given 90 days to transition, and it’s unclear if similar support will be provided this time.
Social media reactions have been mixed. Some users expressed sympathy for those losing jobs, while others pointed out that corporate changes are often necessary for innovation. As the job market sees shifts due to new technologies, many argue that adaptability is key for future success.
According to a survey by Gallup, 62% of employees support companies that strive for efficiency, while 38% prioritize job security, highlighting a complex relationship between workforce changes and company goals.
