Astronomers have made an interesting discovery: they’ve detected radio signals from the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. This comet is zooming toward the sun at over 130,000 mph and is believed to be the oldest of its kind, possibly ejected from an alien star system billions of years ago.
3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar object (ISO) to visit our solar system. While some scientists, like Harvard’s Avi Loeb, have speculated that it could be an alien spacecraft, this claim lacks solid evidence. Such theories often overshadow genuine scientific discussions.
Recently, the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa picked up radio emissions from the comet. Hydroxyl radicals form when water molecules break down, often evident during a comet’s outgassing process. A 2016 study highlights outgassing as a typical sign of comet activity. Earlier this month, NASA observed water being ejected from 3I/ATLAS with notable force, indicating active outgassing during its solar proximity.
Even Loeb, who entertained extreme theories in the past, acknowledged the detection of these radicals but didn’t clarify if they signify typical comet behavior. The signals were detected shortly after the comet hid behind the sun, during which it also unexpectedly brightened and changed color.
3I/ATLAS has shown unusual features that stir up conspiracy theories, like a high radiation level and an unusual anti-tail. Yet, experts have explained these characteristics, reinforcing the view that the comet is a natural object.
This week, astronomers also observed a so-called “almost interstellar object,” which sparked rumors of an alien probe from 3I/ATLAS. However, even Loeb deemed this idea unlikely, confirming it is just another typical solar system comet.
In recent media discussions, people often express curiosity about the possibility of alien life through ISOs like 3I/ATLAS. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that 65% of Americans believe intelligent extraterrestrial life exists.
