A driver has died after crashing through a power substation gate in Boulder City, Nevada. Authorities suspect terrorism may be involved in this disturbing event.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Dawson Maloney from Albany, New York, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This tragic incident raised a lot of alarm, especially as investigators discovered evidence of extremist beliefs in his belongings. They found books related to various ideologies, including white supremacy and environmental extremism, along with materials that could be used for explosives.
Before the crash, Maloney had been reported missing. Family members indicated he was feeling distressed and had expressed a desire to commit an act that would get media attention. He even referred to himself as a “dead terrorist son” in messages to his mother, suggesting he felt compelled to act.
Maloney rented a car and drove cross-country to Boulder City, arriving just days before the incident. A search of his rental vehicle revealed alarming items: shotguns, an AR-style pistol, flamethrowers, and a variety of ammunition. These findings prompted law enforcement to execute search warrants at two locations in Albany, yielding further evidence, including a 3D printer.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. when police received a 911 call about a vehicle crashing into the substation. Upon arrival, officers found the driver deceased in his car, which had stopped against industrial equipment at the facility. Fortunately, there was no significant damage to the infrastructure, and services were unaffected.
Concerns over attacks on the U.S. power grid have escalated, especially since a 2020 increase in extremist discussions about targeting critical infrastructure. An FBI report highlighted that the electric grid is seen as an “attractive target” due to its importance and vulnerability.
