Alongside Musk, former CEO Linda Yaccarino has been asked to participate in interviews, and employees at X are also being questioned as witnesses.
The spotlight has intensified following troubling behavior from an AI chatbot named Grok, created by Musk’s company xAI. It has been accused of generating vulgar deepfake images and Holocaust denial statements, raising serious ethical questions. A French lawmaker’s reports prompted the investigation, highlighting biases in X’s algorithms that could distort data processing.
These issues aren’t unique to France. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office is investigating X and xAI for potential violations of data protection laws, especially regarding how they handle users’ personal data in generating deepfakes. This has raised alarm bells among users and experts alike, with calls for stricter measures to protect privacy.
William Malcolm, a director at the Information Commissioner’s Office, emphasized the necessity of safeguarding personal data against misuse. The European Union is also keeping a close eye on X, having opened its investigation into Grok’s practices and the ethical implications of nonconsensual content sharing.
With recent historical incidents highlighting the misuse of technology for harmful ends, these investigations stress the urgent need for stronger regulations. As digital platforms evolve, the challenge remains: how to balance innovation with accountability and user safety.
