CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks have placed Connor Bedard on injured reserve, effective since December 12. This news comes after the young center suffered an upper-body injury late in a game against the St. Louis Blues.
At just 20 years old, Bedard collided with Blues’ Brayden Schenn during a face-off, resulting in a fall where he injured his right shoulder. He left the ice with only one second left in the third period.
Bedard has been a standout player for the Blackhawks, leading the team with 44 points from 19 goals and 25 assists in 31 games. This impressive performance places him fourth overall in the NHL. With his talents, he could also be a contender for Team Canada in the 2026 Olympics in Milano Cortina.
Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill commented on the injury, noting that it was unfortunate to happen with so little time left in the game. “Brayden Schenn is a great player and wasn’t trying to cause harm. The injury occurred before any significant play,” he explained. “You never expect things like this, especially at the end of a game.”
The Blackhawks are currently at a record of 13-13-6 and about to embark on a three-game road trip, starting with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In light of Bedard’s injury, the team has made some roster changes. They’ve recalled goalie Laurent Brossoit and defenseman Ethan Del Mastro from the AHL, along with bringing up Nick Lardis, who made his NHL debut recently. Lardis has been performing well in the AHL, with 26 points in 24 games this season.
Last season, Bedard recorded 67 points, showcasing his skill as a rising star in the league. He won the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league’s top rookie, despite missing part of the season due to a fractured jaw. His journey highlights both challenges and achievements, marking him as a player to watch as he navigates his career.
As the Blackhawks move forward without Bedard, they will look to maintain their competitiveness in the league. The impact of his absence will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
