The Brewers have made a move by acquiring right-handed pitcher Jake Woodford from the Rays. This trade comes after Woodford triggered an upward mobility clause in his minor league deal, which allowed him to seek a spot with another team. In return, the Rays receive right-hander K.C. Hunt.
At 29, Woodford previously spent time with the Cardinals, where he logged 116 innings in 2021 and 2022. During that period, he posted a 3.26 ERA, although his strikeout rate was relatively low at 15.4%. He did, however, manage to induce a good number of ground balls, making him a valuable asset despite the lack of strikeouts.
In recent years, Woodford has struggled, finishing with an ERA above 6.00 each season. This led to a minor league deal with the Rays, where he performed decently in spring training, allowing just one earned run over 7.1 innings while striking out five.
The Brewers’ pitching staff can be quite flexible, and they hope Woodford can find his rhythm. Although Woodford is out of options, meaning he will remain on the active roster, he needs to deliver strong performances to secure a long-term spot. If he does well, he might even stay for the next season through arbitration.
On the flip side, K.C. Hunt, age 25, had a solid year in Double-A last season, making 26 starts and finishing with a 4.45 ERA. He also impressed with a 23.8% strikeout rate. Although not viewed as a future star, he’s a promising depth option.
Injuries have impacted the Brewers, with outfielder Akil Baddoo placed on the 60-day injured list due to a left quad strain. This likely means Milwaukee will start the season with Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, and Garrett Mitchell in the outfield. Veteran Christian Yelich will also contribute, depending on his designated hitter role.
With this trade, the Brewers could benefit from the fresh talent while giving Hunt a chance to grow in the Rays’ system. As baseball evolves, teams are continually looking for the best combinations to maximize their rosters, and the Brewers hope this move adds depth and potential to their lineup.
