A bullet recently pierced the glass in Andy Reid’s office at the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice facility. Fortunately, the head coach was unharmed during the incident that occurred on May 4, 2024, around midnight.
The bullet came from outside the building and struck the wall about 15 feet away from where Reid was working. Three shots hit the facility that night—one on the third floor, one near Reid’s office, and another that damaged an air-conditioning unit. Thankfully, no one else in the building was injured.
According to Kansas City police spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina, the case is classified as aggravated assault since the building was occupied at the time. There have been no arrests thus far, but officials believe this was not aimed at anyone in particular.
In response to the incident, Reid has since outfitted his office with bulletproof glass for added safety.
This incident highlights concerns around safety in public spaces, especially for high-profile individuals. In recent years, there has been an uptick in similar events, sparking discussions about security measures in sports facilities. A recent survey from the National Security Institute found that around 63% of organizations in high-visibility sectors are investing more in security following such incidents.
While the Chiefs have not commented publicly on this specific event, Reid is expected to address reporters after the team’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Friday.
