Measles Alert in Coconino County
Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) has reported the first case of measles this year. The county is collaborating with local and state health partners to inform people who might have been exposed.
If you visited any of these locations on the specified dates, keep an eye out for symptoms:
- Page High School: March 12, 7:30 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.
- Safeway (650 Elm Street): March 12, 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Banner Page Hospital: March 16, 12:40 p.m. to 5:20 p.m.
Symptoms usually appear seven to 12 days after exposure but can take up to 21 days. Watch for:
- Fever (101°F or higher)
- Red, watery eyes
- Cough
- Runny nose
- A raised, blotchy rash that often starts at the hairline and spreads down the body.
Measles is highly contagious but preventable with two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, usually given in childhood.
An interesting fact: in 2000, the U.S. was declared measles-free due to widespread vaccination. However, cases have surged in recent years. According to the CDC, there were 10 times more measles cases reported in 2019 compared to 2018, primarily due to declining vaccination rates.
