Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film “Sgt. Rock” is facing some challenges. Reports indicate that actor Daniel Craig has stepped away from the lead role. This news comes as the film, a DC Comics adaptation, was expected to be one of Guadagnino’s next projects.
Initially announced by The Hollywood Reporter, the reason for Craig’s departure hasn’t been revealed. However, there is talk of other actors being considered, with Jeremy Allen White mentioned as a possible replacement. Both Craig and Guadagnino’s representatives have yet to comment on the situation.
“Sgt. Rock” was first announced in November 2024. It was seen as an exciting reunion for Guadagnino and Craig, who collaborated on the film “Queer.” Justin Kuritzkes, who worked on both “Queer” and “Challengers,” was set to write the script.
The character of Sgt. Rock has a long history, first appearing in the 1959 comic “Our Army at War.” He became the star of his own comic series from 1977 to 1988, known for being an elite soldier in World War II with near-superhuman skills in strength and marksmanship.
This isn’t the first time Guadagnino has experienced setbacks with his projects. He’s known for announcing films that often don’t make it to production. Some of these include planned sequels to “Call Me By Your Name” and an adaptation of Bob Dylan’s album “Blood on the Tracks.” He also teased a remake of “American Psycho,” although that was quickly dismissed by the original author, Bret Easton Ellis.
Currently, Guadagnino is busy with post-production on “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. He is also set to direct an adaptation of Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s novel “Separate Rooms,” featuring Josh O’Connor and Léa Seydoux.
“Sgt. Rock” is part of a new lineup of movies from DC Studios, led by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The revamped DC universe will kick off with a new “Superman” film this summer, written and directed by Gunn.
