Dave Roberts is on the verge of signing a long-term extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to sources. Talks about the new deal have been ongoing since early February. Although there have been some ups and downs in discussions, both sides are expected to finalize the agreement before the Dodgers head to Japan for the season opener on Wednesday.
Currently, the biggest contract for a manager belongs to Craig Counsell, who recently signed a five-year deal worth $40 million with the Chicago Cubs after leaving the Milwaukee Brewers. Many believe Roberts’ upcoming contract will surpass Counsell’s in either length or total value, perhaps even both.
At 52 years old, Roberts is entering his 10th season with the Dodgers, and this season marks the end of his current contract. He has already led the team to two World Series championships in five years, including one during the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19.
Under Roberts, the Dodgers have also claimed four National League pennants and eight division titles, boasting an impressive .627 winning percentage— the highest in the team’s history. The news of Roberts’ extension was first reported by the New York Post.
